Live Blogging: Dirt Level

Tomorrow the iPad goes to the garden with me! Will an iris open?

Irises About to Bloom!

Looks like tomorrow will be the day!  I wish I knew the name of the cultivar. It's one of the front garden that did not get the full treatment.  They didn't get hit by the borers.  Nothing else is as close to blooming and the it looks like it is going to be pretty spectacular.

I am counting on someone to recognize this one.

Other cultivars in this garden are doing very well.

Three new rhizomes that are showing scape development are exciting.  Black 2011 introductions, Frontline and Blushing are both going to bloom.  Frisky Frolic (Black, 2008) is an IB that came via David Cupps looks like it will bloom as well!

New Daylily Planting

The latest arrival for planting was a from Smokey Daylily Farms in Indiana.  They primarily seem to be a landscape supply house. To fill a garden with lots of daylilies at a reasonable price it seems a good option.  I was pleased with the look of most of what I received.  Where you see "(5)" in captions below I took advantage of a sale offering 5 fans of those varieties.   One cultivar, "Naranja," was missing from the order.

Today it is raining, so I am glad I got these into the ground yesterday.  Here they are:

Out, Out, Damned Spot

Daconil (chlorothalonil) is loaded and ready for application 2 in a week or so.  The cold, the wet, the weird spring seems to have been a perfect brewing pot for leaf spot.  I have been cutting, and spraying to attack the problem.  As advised, I added a drop of dish detergent to promote adherence to the leaf.

It first the wilted leaves seemed to have been a result of several hard frosts over the last two weeks.  Closer investigation revealed a bigger problem.

A few of my tall bearded iris including Vision in Pink are showing scape development.  Some of them already appear stunted.

Maybe 2013 will be impressive. At least the tulips were great this year.

Vision in Pink is developing a scape.
