2nd Order from Iris4U.com

Working on filling out my Medal Winners, I added a few from a new source.  I will report in the fall how my experience is with iris4u.com.  Bob Van Liere, is a hybridizer.

'Drama Queen' (TB K.Keppel 2002)
American Dykes Medal 2011
Wister Medal 2009
'Drama Queen' (Keith Keppel, R. 2002). Seedling 96-10B. TB, height 38" (97 cm), Early Mid bloom season. Standards near-solid dark blackish cyclamen purple (M&P 48-L-9/10), very faint golden buff ground toward base; style arms blended rose brown (7-H-8) and slate purple (46-I-6); falls cyclamen (47-L-9), golden capucine buff (9-E-5) ground showing as blaze and distinct veining; beards rusty orange (11-H-2), purple mid-layer, white base; slight sweet fragrance. Parentage 'Tangled Web' X 'Epicenter'. Keppel 2003. Honorable Mention 2005; Award of Merit 2007Wister Medal 2009American Dykes Medal 2011.

'Mesmerizer' (TB Byers 1990)
American Dykes Medal 2002
Wister Medal 2000

'Mesmerizer' (Monty Byers, R. 1990). Sdlg. E101-1. TB, 36" (91 cm), Medium season Bloomer. Ruffled white; beards tangerine red with large uplifted frilly white flounce terminating in pale green button pompon. B37-12: ('Sky Hooks' x 'Condottiere') X 'Branching Out'. Moonshine 1991. Honorable Mention 1993; Award of Merit 1996; Wister Medal 2000American Dykes Medal 2002.

'Anvil of Darkness' (TB Innerst 2013)
'Anvil of Darkness' (Sterling Innerst, registered 1998). Seedling 3936-10. TB, height 29" (75 cm), mid season bloom. Black self; beards black; slight fragrance. 2336-3: ('By Night' x 'Swazi Princess') X 'Before The Storm'. Innerst 1998. Honorable Mention 2000; President's Cup 2001Award of Merit 2002.

UPDATE:  I Intended to order 'Hello Darkness', a Dykes Winner, but ordered 'Anvil' instead. Bob Van Liere was gracious about making a change, but 'Hello Darkness' is not one he sells. Dykes Medal Winner does not equal great grower in any particular area.  In fact Beverly Sills preforms well for some in my area and for others, not so much.  Van Liere writes...
Neil,  I have never been able to grow Hello Darkness.  When ever it came out, 10-12 years ago maybe longer I ordered 3 plants and I think I still have 3 plants maybe less or I just completely gave up on it and discarded what I did have.  It has maybe flowered once in all those years, it just won't increase for me.  I have moved it and it isn't happy any place I have planted it.  Anvil of Darkness, Before the Storm and Black Suited are the three really black ones that seem to do well for me.  Midnight Oil has never respond to our climate either.  I need to try some of the newer ones but haven't gotten around to ordering them yet.  Maybe this year.  If you don't want Anvil of Darkness let me know which one I can replace it with.
So I will give it a chance!  I have 'Before the Storm' and 'Night Owl', two "black" cultivars.  Night Owl did really well for a number of years, but neither did anything much last year.

'Crowned Heads' (TB Keppel 1996)
American Dykes Medal 2004
Wister Medal 2003
'Crowned Heads' (Keith Keppel, R. 1996). Seedling 90-67A. TB, 38" (97 cm), Mid boom season. Standards wisteria violet (M&P 41-E-8/9), slightly deeper (41-HI-10) base; style arms light blue (41-A-5/6); falls light blue (33-A-5) shaded deeper (41-B-8) in heart, aging silvery blue white; beards blue (33-A-7), goldenrod (10-L-5) in throat; slight sweet fragrance. 'In Reverse' X 'Honky Tonk Blues'. Keppel 1997. Honorable Mention 1999; Award of Merit 2001Wister Medal 2003American Dykes Medal 2004.

2013 TB Iris Introductions by Paul Black (and Thomas Johnson link)

I've posted the 2013 Tall Bearded Intros from Thomas Johnson (and just updated that with the 2013 catalog descriptions).  Now here are the 2013 Tall Bearded Iris Introductions by Paul Black and their catalog descriptions.

'After the Rain' (TB Black 2013)
AFTER THE RAIN
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 36” (91cm) The road to a white iris with dark blue beard has been long and elusive. Luckily this work has been rewarded with other outstanding irises along the way. After the Rain is one of those. Amply ruffled and strongly flared milk glass white blooms have standards blushed light violet up midribs. Show stalks have 3 branches and 8-10 buds. Clean, healthy growth. Heavy substance. Sdlg. R31A: Simply Sensational X Blue Trill

'All Ashore' (TB Black 2013)
ALL ASHORE
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 34” (86cm) Strong, classically formed and heavily ruffled flowers make All Ashore a standout in any garden. Robust, healthy plants with clean foliage produce show stalks having 2 branches plus spur and carrying 7-9 buds. Heavy substance assures long lasting bloom. Sweet perfume. Excellent parentage. It is an iris you will return to again and again. Sdlg. R21A: In Living Color X (Louisa’s Song x Sea Power)

'Bashful Princess' (TB Black 2013)
BASHFUL PRINCESS
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 34” (86cm) Such a demure being should be given a special place in the garden. White standards have pink bases turning to pink veins over centers. Dusky rose hafts and veins are overlaid on cream tan falls. Make note of the peach styles. Soft tangerine coral beards are a nice and fitting accent. Three branches have 8-10 buds. Sweet fragrance. Sdlg. R61A: Wish List X (Impulsive x Luscious Lace)

'Beauty Contest' (TB Black 2013)
BEAUTY CONTEST
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason 35” (89 cm) If it is splendidly unique color you’re looking for, look no further. Mid pink standard color repeats in narrow bands around grape purple falls. Smoldering burnt coral orange beards add a bit of drama to this Beauty Contest. Branching and buds are quite variable with 2-3 branches and 5-9 buds. Garden visitors have universally loved this beauty. Sdlg. P211C: Sirocco Mist X Dinner Talk. Wicked Good sib

'Cher And Cher Alike' (TB Black 2013)
CHER AND CHER ALIKE
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 38” (97cm) The time of ordinary standards is over. The rise of new colors and patterns is giving them greater impact and prominence. Deeply saturated amethyst standards have a shimmering satin sheen, are banded plum and intermittently rimmed gilt gold. Plush black falls are set ablaze by dark marigold beards. Strong growth produces show stalks with 3 branches and 7-8 buds. Sdlg. R117A: (Bold Encounter x Foreign Legion) X ((On the House x Romantic Evening) x High Master)

'Enough is Enough' (TB Black 2013)
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Very Late 35” (89cm) Compact flowers are ruffled and laced. Falls are the same mid smoky violet as standards but within a few hours centers pale to lovely satiny blue lavender. Big prominent red-orange beards make it anything but boring. Clean vigorous growth produces stalks with 2 branches plus spur and about 7 buds. Heavy waxen substance assures long lasting flowers. Excellent parent for strong growing reverse bicolors and amoenas. Sdlg. O148B: (Suspicion x Cool Confidence) X (Happenstance x (Fashionably Late x Keeping Up Appearances))

'Fred and Ginger' (TB Black 2013)
FRED AND GINGER
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 31” (79cm) What a lovely ensemble of grace, charm and elegance. Smoky purple standards blend to mauve-pink margins. Chalky light blue falls are banded cameo pink. Unique beards are half coral and half pale blue. Nicely branched stalks have 2 branches plus spur and 7-8 buds. Interesting parentage. Sdlg. R142A: Handmade pollen parent sib X (Flashy Show Girl x (Cameo Appearance sib x Heaven))

'Giorgio' (TB Black 2013)
GIORGIO
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 40” (102cm) ‘Kiss of Passion’ has been used to help strengthen the standards of some of the current amoenas. In the case of Giorgio it worked very well. Standards are domed and strongly held in place. Tall strong show stalks have 3 branches and 8-9 buds. Growth is healthy and clean. You have to love those big orange red beards! Veining in the falls looks a bit like cascading fireworks. Sdlg. Q15A: Kiss of Passion X Gypsy Lord

'I'm All Shook Up' (TB Black 2013)
I'M ALL SHOOK UP
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 30” (76cm) The name says it all. Just to see how shook up, look at the back cover. Once again the standards take center stage. The cross of (Meritage x Pharaoh’s Spirit) was the beginning of three distinct bands of color in the standards. I’m All Shook Up builds on that heritage. Color and pattern of falls is also quite unique. Two branches plus spur carry 9-10 buds. This is a must have for any collector’s garden. This is one you won’t need a label to be able to identify it. Sdlg. R113A: (Bold Encounter x Foreign Legion) X (Meritage x Pharaoh’s Spirit)

'Laughing Clown' (TB Black 2013)
LAUGHING CLOWN
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Very Late 35” (89cm) Laughing Clown is a sure fire show stopper for the end of the season. Ruffled standards are pure bright white. Deep purple falls are neatly edged white. White area around beards is heavily sanded and lined purple. Fast increaser. Show stalks have 3 branches and 8-10 buds. Sdlg.Q4A: Clearance Sale X Liberal Bias

'Melody of Spring' (TB Black 2013)
MELODY OF SPRING
(Black ‘13) TB Late-Very Late 38” (97cm) Once you’ve seen it in your garden you’ll be singing its praises. White standards have yellow margins and veins overall. Strongly flared and ruffled falls are white with yellow rims and hafts. Strong show stalks have 3 branches and 8-10 buds. Husky growth with average increase. Sdlg. R82B: (Padded Shoulders x Country Dawn) X Material Girl

'Men Are From Mars' (TB Black 2013)
MEN ARE FROM MARS
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 40” (102cm) Men may be from Mars but this down to earth creation has fabulous flowers, stalks and clumps. Clumps are some of the healthiest and most floriferous in the garden. You’ll be glad you have it. Note the gold veining in upper 1/3 of the standards. With Class Clown as one parent, it should be of interest to those breeding rebloomers. Sdlg. R77G: Class Clown X (Ransom Note x What’s My Line)

'Out And About' (TB Black 2013)

OUT AND ABOUT
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 40” (102cm) This sibling to ‘Men are from Mars’ has all the fine traits that it does. Rosy mauve standards have light gilt gold rims. Rich red-purple falls have darker plum hafts. Very neat beards are deep burnt orange. Growth is strong and healthy. Clumps are filled with show stalks having 3 branches and 9-10 buds. Sdlg. R77A: Men are from Mars sib

'Peach Butter' (TB Black 2013)

PEACH BUTTER
(Black ‘13) TB Early-Midseason 34” (86cm) Clumps of ‘Peach Butter’ are filled with multitudes of moderate sized yummy flowers. Standards are mid peach and falls slightly darker apricot peach. Ruffling is very much in keeping with flower size. Show stalks usually have 4 branches and 8-9 buds. Moderate sized flowers make it easier to transport that stalk to a show without damage. Growth is strong and increase abundant. Use as parent for BBs, IBs and even tet MTBs. Sdlg. R110K: Blushing sib X (Lady of the Night x Paul Black)

'Twice Is Nice' (TB Black 2013)
TWICE IS NICE
(Black ‘13) TB Early-Midseason-Rebloom 42” (107cm) Twice is definitely nice when the form and color are what one would expect from a modern iris. Standards are wheat tan. Vibrant fuchsia falls have dark red plum hafts and bands. Dark burnt orange beards are a lovely complement. Several excellent reblooming seedlings were numbered from this cross. Sdlg. S69AR: Class Clown X (Cantina x Sweetly Sung)

'Very Very Good' (TB Black 2013)

VERY VERY GOOD
(Black ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 30” (76cm) Who could resist these big flashy orange beards! Even though it has shorter stalks and moderate sized flowers, you still won’t be able to ignore it because of the beards. Perfectly proportioned stalks have 3 branches and 8-9 buds. Strong vigorous growth assures instant clumps. Nice fragrance. R110I: Blushing sib X (Lady of the Night x Paul Black)

First Iris Order of the Year

Last year I missed out on the new Dykes medal winner.  This year I was determined not to. As am immediate gratification kind of guy this is an exercise in self control for me!  July is when shipping starts... sigh.

The first batch will come from Mid-America.  They no longer sell the 2011 Dykes winner in their catalog so Drama Queen will come in batch two.  But the 2012 winner Florentine Silk is in the pipeline!  Along with some other winners and some new introductions.  I am excited...

2013 TB Iris Introductions by Thomas Johnson

From their Facebook page, here are the 2013 Mid-America Introductions.  All from Thomas Johnson, so it seems that Paul Black really did retire...

UPDATE:  Paul Black had 40 Introductions in the catalog!  Mostly medians, but 13 TBs and 1 MDB.  I have added catalog descriptions for Thomas' Introduction and 'Full of Grace', 'In The News' and 'Project Runway', not mentioned in the Facebook postings. Quoted ("") comments are from the Mid-America Facebook page.

---------------------------------------------

"Don't Stop Believing T Johnson 2013 TB. Oh the Beard! This one has been used a lot in hybridizing for Blue bearded pinks. So far it is proving itself to be a good parent. Another child of Secret Affair. A late bloomer but a strong grower and nice tall strong stalks. A favorite."

Don't Stop Believing T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Late 42” (107cm) Well constructed flowers are lavishly ruffled and laced. Standards are clear mid pink. Wide milk glass white falls have pink hafts and edge. Unusual beards are half tangerine and half lilac. Strong stalks have up to 9 buds. You won’t have any trouble believing how beautiful it is. Should be a beneficial parent in working for blue or violet beards on pinks. Sdlg. TA80A: (Ballet Royal x Corps de Ballet) X Secret Affair

"Girl Gone Wild T Johnson 2013 TB. I have been working the lined pattern quite a bit. Love the brightness of this one with very precise veining."

Girl Gone Wild T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Midseason 32” (81cm) This girl has gone completely and totally wild. Standards transition from peach bases to light gold margins. Cream fall centers are overlaid with red lines becoming a red wash over light gold base. Mid gold bands encircle this wild combination of color and pattern. Stalks have 7-8 buds. Totally unique. You won’t mistake it for another. Sdlg.TX16A: Impulsive X Whispering Spirits

"Edge of Heaven T Johnson 2013 TB. The gold halo on the Standards sets this one aglow. Very strong growth and vigor. Very showy in the garden"

Edge of Heaven T Johnson 2013 TB
TB Midseason 36” (92cm) Here’s a colorful addition for your garden. White standards are banded light gold. Large white fall spot transitions to washed mid red purple band and then to wide darker wine band. Yellow lacing on style arms echoes the yellow orange beards and adds a warm touch. Makes a very bright spot in the garden. Sdlg. TB16B: Jazz Band X ((Dude Ranch x Bold Vision) x Snapshot sib)

"Bronze Heart T Johnson 2013 TB. Very unique color. On the shorter end of the class but with gorgeous full formed flowers."

Bronze Heart T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson 13) TB Early-Midseason 34” (86 cm) Subtle and mysterious colors. Standards are icy blue-white. Lavender purple falls have a bronze flash below bright orange beards. Hafts are red brown. Nicely branched stalks have 6-7 buds. Sdlg. TB139A: (Thundermaker x (Natural Grace x Poetess)) X ((Fogbound x Heaven) x Starring)
"Heat is On T Johnson 2013 TB. I love bright colors and this one fits the bill. Large flowers on good stems and strong growth."

Heat is On T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Early-Midseason 35” (89cm) Standards are intense pinkish apricot blend. Wine veins overlay paler apricot sunbursts on wide and ruffled falls. Remainder of fall is dark wine. Tangerine beards bump the heat up one more notch. Heat Is On demands you stop and take note of its presence in the garden. Sdlg. TB30A: Snapshot X Guardian Angel
"Land Down Under T Johnson 2013 TB. Not sure what to call it, perhaps a reverse brown bitone? or maybe just a reverse bicolor. This is a sib to Auckland and last years Scandinavian Gal. All three sibs are super strong growers with lots of buds and show stalks. I like each one for different reasons but this is my favorite of the three. Wonderful form and color..."
Land Down Under T Johnson 2013 TB

(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Midseason 38” (97cm) Brassy khaki standards are infused maroon up midribs. Subdued mid gold falls have light violet flashes around old gold beards. Strong stalks have 9 buds. Fast increase creates an instant clump of these beauties. You don’t have to fly south to enjoy Land Down Under. Sdlg. TB129C: (Wintry Sky x Mango Daiquiri sib) X Audacious Amber

"Fine Romance T Johnson 2013 TB. A fellow hybridizer and friend once said that he believed the blue pink coloration seen in Iris was pretty unique to the genus. I have to agree, I know of no other flower that can have these wonderful blue tones in the pink. This is a sib to Faithfully Yours. One of the parents, Secret Affair is going to show up quite a bit in future intros. It has proven itself a great parent for the Blue pink blends with bluish beards and great form."

Fine Romance T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 35” (89cm) Fine Romance has just enough blue in its makeup to appear visually a very clean and clear pink in the garden. Crinkled lace adorns each petal. Beards are soft coral with just a touch of lilac at their ends. Vigorous growth. Sdlg. TA40C: In Love Again X Secret Affair

"Glimmer of Hope T Johnson 2013 TB. Parentage involves Jazz Band, Snapshot, Dude Ranch and Bold Vision. Clump effect is a big plus on this one. Clean clear colors on a very precise pattern. The flowers are of a more moderate size but are produced in profusion with great stalks."

Glimmer of Hope T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Midseason 35” (89cm) Standards are golden apricot. Falls are several shades lighter blending paler approaching mango beards. Falls are edged with a ruffled red-brown band. Moderate sized flowers are presented on show stalks having up to 9 buds. Sdlg. TC85A: ((Dude Ranch x Bold Vision) x Snapshot sib) X Jazz Band
"Arts And Crafts T Johnson 2013 TB. This one is similar to In The News but a bit more of a blend. In the garden it give somewhat of a gothic look."
Arts And Crafts T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Midseason-Late 36” (91cm) Light yellow standards beam from above falls washed and shaded maroon. Mustard beards are surrrounded by lighter yellow patches. Amply ruffled falls are edged tan. Show stalks average 9 buds. Sdlg. TA1C: Bold Encounter X Brave Face

"Taking Chances T Johnson 2013 TB. This is a sister seedling to Beacon of Light. Nice clean contrast with a lighter edge on the falls. Nice ruffles and looks good in clump."

Taking Chances T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Early 34” (86cm) There isn’t much chance you won’t like this frothy ruffled creation. Closed and ruffled standards are icy violet white. Mid purple falls blend darker over centers and hafts and have narrow violet white bands. Sdlg. TC72D: Painter’s Touch X Dinner Talk

"Call Me Maybe T Johnson 2013 TB. An interesting blending of pinks and violets in this one. Comes from a cross involving Royal Sterling, Decadence and Hysteria. Will most likely be a love it or hate it color but lots of interesting breeding potential. I love the "watermark" band on the falls and the nice ruffled form."
Call Me Maybe T Johnson 2013 TB
TB Early-Midseason 34” (86cm) Pale pink standards are flushed light violet. Palest pink falls are washed and veined light violet to within 1/4” of edge. About 7 buds is normal. All petals are heavily ruffled. Sdlg. TC369B: Cameo Minx sib X Hysteria
"Full Disclosure T Johnson 2013 TB. My first flat introduction. It has been extremely consistent for us. Good stems and growth with six falls and 6 beards."

Full Disclosure T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Midseason 36” (91cm) For those connoisseurs of flat irises, Full Disclosure is a stable addition to your collection. It is a true flat, having beards on all petals rather than weak standards being passed off as flats. Usually about 7 buds. Sdlg. TC342C: Hysteria sib X Downtown Man sib

"Stole The Show T Johnson 2013 TB. This is a difficult Iris to photograph. Love the clean standards with the 'busy' sunburst signal around the beard. Flashy in the garden and is proving to be an interesting parent, throwing some strange patterned sunbursts. An easy grower."

Stole The Show T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Midseason 33” (84cm) Very appropriately named. You’ll keep coming back again and again for another look. Standards are bright mid yellow. "Beacon Of Light T Johnson 2013 TB. Another bonus for this year. I debated on doing this as a bonus but it is such a strong grower and I have lots of stock. This one really grabs your attention from a distance. Many times I have had people point to it in the field and ask "What is that?" Extremely bright."

Never has failed to wow me each year so has finally made the cut."

Coral Charm T Johnson 2013 TB
(T.Johnson ‘13) TB Midseason 35” (89cm) Coral Charm is all about color! It is one of those that immediately draws the eye away from everything else. Garden visitors bypass many other fantastic irises to get to Coral Charm. Form is simpler but you won’t notice because of the color. Pink base of standards becomes pink veining over white and then pale buff bands. Falls are a blend of hot pink to salmon. Vivid coral red beards make it even brighter. Even the buds are interesting. Creamy white of standards pushes out of pink falls before flowers open. Very cool. Sdlg. TZ104A: Tropical Passion X Impulsive
