We drove to Connecticut to stay at Sharon's beautifully landscape hideaway in Connecticut.

After Kyle left for NYC, the turkey family showed up!

Blogger is great, but when I am on vacation, like I am now, where there is limited or slow access to the Internet, I'm in a pickle.

This charming retreat in the foothills of Adirondack Mountains is Pompanuck Farm Institute.  It is nestled in the woods near the Vermont border outside of Cambridge, NY.  The idyllic setting is complimented by a roadhouse and wood-fired sauna of cord-wood construction.



The grounds include a pond, a beautifully maintained vegetable garden from which the rainbow chard will be harvested for dinner later this week.



The harvested garlic is drying in the barn.

That's what they say. The Tri-X kept over-exposing. But I do like the T-Max.  Shows one more reason identifying unknown blooms is a pain online.

LAST DAY OF IRIS SALE!

Lent A Williamson, (Williamson 1918) TB Historic

Today, Saturday, August 3, is the last day to get locally grown, freshly dug iris rhizomes at amazing bargain prices.  "Named" tall bearded irises are $3, Medians "named" are $2 and "orphans" (No name, color identified) are a buck!  There are purples, gold, light yellow, dark wine and more. There are limited choices left but we have some great historics, Lent A Williamson, Gertrude and Glowing Embers, for tried and long bloom and color.  We also have some standard dwarf bearded varieties that are great for smaller spaces and more wind resistant, blooming at about 10-15".

Twist my arm and I'll dig and sell "Immortality" a pure white re-bloomer which you can see in my garden blooming right now.  See a daylily in the garden that you like?  If it's mature enough I'll dig you a fan or two.

Dahlias and Surprises

Dahlias make a spectacular statement in the garden here at Diamond Rise from mid summer through frost. I manage to dig and store them successfully for the winter with 30% failure rate.  Since they are my third love after irises and daylilies, I don't keep as good track of their cultivar names.  I have also discovered that buying them from Lowes or Home Depot does not supply me with a reliable names.  For example, here's "Barbarossa" from an internet search:

And here's here's what bloomed in my garden from a Lowes package labeled Barbarossa:

If an iris were this mislabeled it would make crazy, but this dahlia is spectacular!  Each blossom is easily 10" in diameter.

It's back! Immortality.

While most irises bloom once a year in late May and early June.  However there are irises that bloom more than once a year.  In some areas where summers last longer, they may re-bloom twice.  In upstate New York there are a limited number that re-bloom reliably. The most popular is a lovely pure white, 'Immortality.' This year it is particularly early in my garden.  If we have a mild fall, maybe it will be back again before the snow flies.
